SNAIL BOWL
Our Snail Bowl series is based on our ancient gastropod whose shell has historically as many symbolic representations as homosapiens have occupied Earth. Mud, clay and soil is poetic material from which we imagine snails to have been forged. And so, to, has it formed our bowls.
Time, process, and transience have been used in art to symbolize the snails’ form due to its coiled carapace which we’ve anthropomorphised into seeing notions of journeying, its pace being an almost dream-like observation associated with meditation. "Oh snail" by Issa Kobayashi captures the essence of a snail's journey up Mount Fuji. The poem's brevity and simple language belie its deeper meaning, suggesting the importance of patience, determination, and the beauty of the journey itself. When using this bowl, perhaps one is able to regard the object within which the food is contained, as well as the food itself, taking into account the experience of eating as a beautiful journey. Becoming snail.
“Oh snail,
climb Mt. Fuji,
but slowly, slowly” - Issa Kobayashi (Oh snail)
